Facebook Privacy Settings

A useful list of 10 privacy settings for facebook. I’m someone who gets a lot of slack for not adding people left right and centre to my facebook profile. I have criteria and I don’t really wish to share information about what I am doing with people I met once on a night out or I worked with briefly in 2004. That’s my major hang up with sites like Facebook, hundreds and hundreds of people having access to information about me, without any control over who can access this information. I know of someone who posted a message related to work on their profile, only for their boss to read it and someone who appeared in embarrassing photo’s on Facebook. All these horror stories I have so far avoided, but inevitably Facebook is going to have to work into more than just my social life.

On the subject of Facebook and privacy another story I read, (and wasn’t all that surprised to see) was Facebook announcing the rolling out of a product research program. This was later denied (of course), but one has to wonder will something of this nature be far down the line. Ireland has 400,000 people on Facebook and 1 Million on Bebo that is a massive resource that could generate a lot of revenue for either company. There are plenty of issues to be ironed out, privacy, opt in/out, quality of the quantitative or qualitative information gained, and end user value – these are just off the top of my head.

What it all comes down to is what information you (and I) wish to share on Facebook. Here’s a list of ten handy tips to keep your Facebook info private, most of which I wasnt aware of. Create groups of friends with different access privilages and when you do have 5,000 friends how you can reduce the amount of ‘Fram’ (friend spam). With thanks to Allfacebook.com
