VT 19/01: Welcome to the first Viral Tuesday of 2010. Heres a quick run down of the top five marketing virals doing the rounds online.
1. Optical Illusions
This blog post on the Viral Marketing Blog has a few optical illusion virals, none of which are marketing related. But I have mentioned in the past that an optical illusion of sorts would surely suit some brand to differentiate their marketing? It could easily be used in an online and offline capacity to engage the consumer. Here’s the clip;

2. Addidas Star Wars
This is an odd looking viral to promote the new Star Wars themed line of Addidas gear. The viral push’s the brands Facebook page and the blurb on the Youtube channel mentions welcoming you to the neighbourhood. Addidas also have some Augmented Reality games in the pipeline featuring a ‘neighbourhood’. The first piece of AR is available now and can be accessed through markers distributed with their footwear. Virals, Facebook, AR I wonder is 2010 going to see a big shift in how Addidas market themselves.
3. T-Mobile Josh’s Band
Continuing in their life is for sharing theme that has already seen a T-Mobile Dance in a London train station, and a flashmob in Trafalgar Square, this T-Mobile ad brings together a bunch of performers. In 2009 4 Myspace friends wrote a song, then on a UK tour that took in Birmingham, Machester, London and Edinburgh they invited people to ‘join the band’ via the text and web. The final result features 1107 performers and musicians all of whom are featured in this viral below, while the song itself is available to buy on iTunes.
4.True Blood Season 3
TV shows that have a dark edge give their respective marketing departments plenty of scope for creativity. Check out my post on Dexter for examples. True Blood, a show about vampires has used Guerrilla and Ambient tactics in the past to promote the HBO programme in an unusual manner. This newly released viral plays upon the Tru Blood substitute blood product featured in the show to announce that series 3 is in production
5. Coca Cola Happiness Machine
This is currently the worlds 2nd most popular viral. And is almost as sickly sweet as the drink itself. The happiness machines distributes ‘happiness’ otherwise known as Coca Cola to unsuspecting members of the public in a USA college and will strike again. Maybe it’s me, maybe its the fact it’s a Tuesday morning, but while this viral does have a feel good factor, I’m jsut wondering how many more of these Candid Camera / Trigger Happy TV style ad’s can we really take?
