Top 100 Websites in Ireland

II found this yesterday on Alexa.com and I thought I’d share it. It’s a list of the top 100 websites in Ireland. Alexa “computes the traffic rankings by analyzing the Web usage of millions of Alexa Toolbar users and data obtained from other, diverse traffic data sources”. There’s a breakdown of these sources here. The data throws up a few oddities and contradicts some other data sources I have seen. Anyways, just a quick glance over different industries shows;

Search Engines
Google is kicking serious search engine ass, holding the top 2 places for its .ie and .com domains as well as 13th for .co.uk, 59th for .pl and 86th for .de. Its closest rivals are Yahoo in 5th, and Bing in 45th.

Social Media
Facebook reigns supreme coming in 3rd place, surprisingly Twitter is now the second most popular social network in 10th place, while former most popular social network in the land Bebo, is in 12th. They’re followed by Linked In at 17, Myspace in 41st and Google’s Orkut is in 79th. Blogger is the most popular blog platform, Flickr for photo sharing while Youtube is by far the most popular video sharing website coming in 4th place. Its only other (non-porn) competitor in the top 100 is Megavideo placed down at 49th.

Top 10 Irish Sites
1. RTE.ie (9th)

2. Boards.ie (15th)

3. Aib.ie (18th)

4. Irishtimes (19th)

5. Daft.ie (20th)

6. 02online.ie (27th)

7. Irish Indo (28th)

8. Done Deal.ie (33rd)

9. Eircome.net (35th)

10. 365online.com (37th)

News Media
Although RTE is the highest placed Irish media website in second is the BBC Newsline Ticker(11th), followed by the already mentioned Irish Times (19th), the Irish Indo (28th), the Guardian in 55th and the Daily Mail in 57th and BreakingNews.ie is in 89th , and the news media entries are rounded off by the Telegraph in 91st.

Pornography
With just one less entry than the eight news media sites, pornography and sites with adult content feature frequently in the top 100. The highest of the seven entries is at 23, coming in higher than many well known brands such as 02 Ireland, the Indo, Aer Lingus and Eircom.

Polish Websites
Polish websites feature 4 times, they’re listed in 29th, (Nasza-klasa.pl), 44th (Onet.pl), 56th (Wirtualna Polska – wp.pl) and Google’s Polish domain in 59th.

Mobile Operators
In 23rd 02 Ireland is the highest entry followed by Vodafone in 40th, while Meteor trail way down in 90th and 3 Ireland in 93rd.

Airlines
Aer Lingus (34th) is listed higher than Ryanair, but the latter’s traffic is probably split between its two entries at 46th and 58th for ryanair.com and bookryanair.com. Looking at the data for Aerlingus you can in 2009 traffic was on a downward trajectory and substantially down towards the end of the year, picking up again last month. Ryanair is harder to compare as its divided into two domains and its traffic comes from a more diverse range of countries than Aer Lingus, however it broadly seems to follow suit.

  2. Alexa is all but useless for analysising traffic in Ireland. I’ve since ditched it for any competitive analysis – favouring data sourced from Google, like this: – http://www.barryhand.ie/blog/top-websites-in-ireland-december-2009/

  3. Thanks for that link Barry. I had a funny feeling when I saw Twitter ranked higher than Bebo that the data was questionable.
